Sweetheart Cup Owings Mills 11MW CHP Facility

In order to provide reliable power at a reduced rate, Sweetheart Cup Factory (SOLO Cup) in Owings Mills, Maryland decided to build a CHP facility dedicated to the factory. The project culminated in a 11 MW CHP system comprised of two Wärtsilä 18V34SG gas engines and designed to provide steam to keep wax in its liquid form during Sweetheart Cup’s wax-coating process. During the cooler months, the CHP system is also used to provide space heating for one of the company's buildings. This technology maximized fuel efficiency, thus providing Sweetheart Cup with lower production costs as well as environmental benefits.

The project included a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system using urea injection into the exhaust steam, which was employed to achieve ultra-low emissions. The plant provided nitrogen oxide (NOx) levels lower than 5 ppm, which was one of the lowest emission levels for a power plant with gas reciprocating engines.
